Pre-bedtime movie party

DSC_3101

Steve is really fun. I wish I were as fun as he is. What is it about dad's that make them the go-to person for everything fun? I, sadly, am not that person. I wish I were. Oh, wait... I said that already. It's really true. Usually by the time we get home from whatever it is we are always doing at night, I am beat. I am eyeing the clock and waiting for the moment to say "Bedtime". I am worn out by the day of yelling, high pitched screaming (the dragon is chasing the princess, of course), the questions, the diapers, etc. I could really make a post about everything I do all day but I don't think anyone would want to read it. But there comes a point when I am ready for this to be over for a bit so I can relax, and gear up for the next day. So, hence, I am no fun. That is sad. I need to be better with the fun stuff.

Steve, on the other hand, is totally fun. He never seems to be ready for bedtime. When I tell him it's about that time he usually looks at me like one of the kids, like "Really? Can't they stay up a little longer?" That is the kind of dad Steve is. Totally fun. All the time.

One thing Steve really likes to do is have sleepovers. He thought this was so fun when he was little so he wants to do it with our kids. I think the idea is really fun, but the mother in me snaps into gear and starts thinking about the logistics... the kids aren't going to get very good sleep and that means they are going to be hard tomorrow and that leaves me with hard kids and I don't know if I can handle it. Or... I don't know if I want to sleep on the hard ground when my bed is just up the stairs and treats me very well. And have you seen the way our kids sleep? I don't know if I can sleep through the flapping arms and kicking legs throughout the night. Then there's... I would really like to spend some alone time with my husband, watch a movie that isn't rated G and animated, and maybe talk about something besides princesses and McQueen.

I'm boring, I know. That's why Steve is the fun one.

But every now and then Steve suggests having a sleepover and I say sure and the kids are in heaven. We had one of those nights last Friday. I didn't take any pictures, the kids were up until at least 12:00 (Steve and I both were asleep at that point with the kids still tossing and turning around us) and I escaped to my bed at about 2:00. But the kids had a blast and to be honest, so did I.

I am not always up for a full-on sleepover so sometimes we have a pre-bedtime movie party. We have dinner or a snack if we have already eaten...

Pick out a movie and settle in for a little pre-bedtime family-time.

This was a fun night we had after traveling a long way for a short time at a wedding reception. The kids did great and deserved a little fun before we rushed them to bed. We really had a great time and love doing things like this together. How long are our kids going to want to clime in our bed to watch movies with us? How long are we going to all fit???

I feel the same way as you! I want to be the fun mom, but by the time bed time comes a around, I am so ready. So ready to actually have some me time. Micah, on the other hand, winds Beckham up. Ah...the joys of being a mom.

We used to do that when our kids were little. Shane's comment (he was about 3): "When we get married, how will we all fit in this bed?" Fun times!

Hey if you can have that much fun at night at a sleepover then it's worth having a hard day the next day, right? Fun idea!

What a fun idea! I am more on your side with the pre-bedtime movie and not a full on sleepover. Mommy gets VERY cranky on little sleep and no one likes mommy when she's cranky. haha!
